Abstract
Carbon footprint of tourism activities in the Tío Yacu rural recreation area of the Elías Soplin Vargas district, 2024 Tourism has experienced remarkable growth in recent decades, becoming one of the most important economic sectors. However, it has also significantly contributed to the increase in greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs), responsible for 75% of global warming. In Peru, tourist activity has increased due to its rich cultural and biological diversity, but it has also generated negative impacts such as landscape damage, waste generation, loss of ecosystems, and traditional values. Among the various attractions at the regional level, the rural center “Tío Yacu”, located in the district of Elías Soplin Vargas, province of Rioja, is one of the most visited tourist destinations at the provincial level. The following project arises in response to the growing concern about the carbon footprint generated by tourism activity in the tourism sector. The general objective is to Estimate the carbon footprint of tourist activities at the rural center Tío Yacu in the district of Elías Soplin Vargas, 2024; the specific objectives are: Identify the main sources of carbon emissions at the rural center “Tío Yacu” in the district of Elías Soplin Vargas., Quantify GHG emissions associated with tourist activities at the Rural Center Tío Yacu during the year 2024, Propose strategies to minimize the carbon footprint at the rural center “Tío Yacu” in the district of Elías Soplin Vargas. The proposed methodology involves conducting surveys with a representative sample of establishment visitors. These surveys will be complemented by the application of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Standard (GHG Protocol), internationally recognized for its rigor in measuring greenhouse gas emissions. The study will not only benefit the “Tío Yacu” tourist center, but will also provide valuable information for the tourism industry in general. Reducing the carbon footprint in tourist destinations will contribute to environmental sustainability and the fulfillment of international commitments in the fight against climate change.
